A Tech Scandal at the AI Summit.. An Indian University Under Fire Because of a Chinese Robot

The participation of Galgotias University in the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi turned into a public crisis, after the university was removed from the exhibition area following the spread of a video clip that sparked a wave of widespread criticism on social media platforms.

The story began when the university displayed inside its pavilion a quadruped robot it named “Orion”, presenting it as the product of its own Center of Excellence. However, internet users quickly revealed that the device is in fact the Unitree Go2 model, manufactured by the Chinese company "Unitree", and available for sale in the Indian market at prices ranging between 200,000 and 300,000 rupees.

A Video That Ignited the Controversy

The circulating clip showed a university representative demonstrating the robot's capabilities in front of the media, asserting that it was developed by the center. Another university professor also appeared repeating the same claim.

But after the video spread, social media users began circulating the original robot's specifications, leading to accusations against the university of attempting to attribute a foreign product to itself, at a time when India is witnessing great momentum to support local innovation and reduce dependence on imported technology.

An Official Retraction and Contradictory Justifications

As criticism escalated, the university issued a statement via X clarifying that the robot was purchased from Unitree, and that displaying it at the summit was intended to use it as an educational tool for its students, asserting that it "never claimed to have manufactured it".

However, this clarification contradicted what appeared in the circulating videos, which showed university representatives explicitly stating that the robot was their own development.

In a subsequent statement, the university described the criticism as a "smear campaign" targeting it. But its post received a Community Note pointing out that the robot was indeed displayed under a new name and presented as a local innovation.

“Misunderstanding” or Misinformation?

Professor Neha, from the College of Management and Communication — who appeared in the video asserting that the robot was developed by the university — later returned to say that what happened was a "misunderstanding", adding that she is not a specialist in AI and may not have expressed her idea accurately, affirming that the robot was intended for display purposes only.

Was the University Actually Expelled?

While reports spoke of the university being removed from the exhibition area, another professor, Aishwarya Shrivastava, said they had not yet received any official notification of expulsion.

Despite the conflicting accounts, the incident continues to spark a wide debate within academic and technical circles in India, especially given the sensitivity of the national innovation file and the country's pursuit of cementing its position as a rising power in the field of AI.
