Drones for Delivering Vaccines and Orders – "Zipline"
When drones are deployed to deliver orders and COVID-19 vaccines, things will certainly change:
The drone delivery service company known as "Zipline" announced last Thursday
that it plans to begin transporting COVID-19 vaccines starting next April.
The startup, headquartered in South San Francisco, stated in a press release
that it is partnering with a leading COVID-19 vaccine manufacturer in all markets where its aircraft currently operate
autonomously.
According to Bloomberg, "Zipline" has been delivering medicines and supplies to rural clinics
in Rwanda and Ghana since 2016, and last year
it began providing personal protective equipment to hospitals and clinics in North Carolina,
and the company also plans to add operations in Nigeria later this year.
Zipline declined to identify its vaccine manufacturing partner,
but said it has built a system capable of supplying medical products that require ultra-cold temperature storage,
including leading COVID-19 vaccines.
Zipline announced that it can help bypass the need for freezers, and thus prevent vaccines from spoiling,
by delivering small numbers of doses repeatedly on demand.
The company also said that clinics within its network will be able to order dozens of coronavirus vaccine doses
and receive them at ultra-low temperatures in less than one hour.
Zipline's battery-powered fixed-wing aircraft navigate using GPS,
dropping payloads of several pounds by parachute, and are capable of flying up to 100 miles round trip.
A single distribution site can operate dozens of drones and cover an area of up to 8,000 square miles.
The company said its drones have flown more than 4 million miles and completed approximately 400,000 deliveries over the
past five years.
Zipline's CEO, Keller Rinaudo, announced that the company intends to help remote and rural areas
that have been severely impacted by the novel coronavirus,
adding: "Where you live cannot determine whether you get the vaccine or not.
We can help health systems overcome infrastructure and supply chain challenges through on-demand delivery."
Zipline is an American medical product delivery company headquartered in South San Francisco, California, that
designs, manufactures, and operates delivery drones. The company operates distribution centers in Rwanda, Ghana, and
the United States. As of February 2021, its drones had flown more than 4,000,000 miles and made approximately 400,000 deliveries in
the past five years. [1]
The company's drones deliver whole blood, platelets, frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitate alongside more than 220 medical
products, including vaccines, injections, and routine medical supplies. As of September 2021, more than 75% of blood
deliveries in Rwanda outside Kigali use Zipline drones. In April 2019 in Ghana, the company began using drones to
deliver vaccines, blood, and medicines. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the US Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA) granted a Part 107 waiver to Zipline's partner organization Novant Health for the delivery of medical supplies and
().
Along with nine other drone delivery companies, the FAA selected Zip
line to participate in the type certificate program for
delivery drones. [2]
