The Dark Side of AI Images

AI Images Sweep the Internet.. But What Is the Hidden Price Behind the Entertainment? The Dark Side of AI Images
AI Visual Trends.. Fleeting Entertainment or Digital Exploitation?
Following the widespread buzz sparked by the “Studio Ghibli” image-transformation trend at the end of last March — which swept across social media platforms — generative AI tools, led by ChatGPT, continued searching for new ways to attract users, but this time through a more personal approach tied to visual identity.
The new trend, dubbed “AI doll” or what is known as the “Barbie Box Trend”, invites users to upload their personal photos to be transformed into digital characters inside miniature toy boxes, resembling “Barbie” dolls or illustrated action figures, with added elements and accessories reflecting their profession or personal interests.
The mechanism behind these digital trends has become familiar and almost repetitive: the user uploads a personal photo to the tool or app, adds some prompt instructions, and the artistic transformation process begins, ultimately producing a visually stunning result, the goal of which is usually sharing it on social media to attract engagement and likes.
But amid this momentary fascination, the most important question remains: What is the real price we pay for this visual entertainment? And do we truly understand how our data and images are being used behind the scenes of these applications?
The Privacy Illusion.. Consent Without Awareness
Amid the overwhelming enthusiasm surrounding AI image generation trends — whether in the form of AI Doll or Studio Ghibli style — companies like OpenAI and xAI found a golden opportunity to feed their systems with massive amounts of personal visual data, without needing to expend any significant effort to collect it.
What is truly surprising is that a large segment of participants in these trends may have never used AI tools before, suggesting that the real motivation was not technological, but rather driven by the desire to join the wave of interaction and rapid spread across social media platforms. The concern deepened when many parents began sharing photos of their children as part of these trends, without full awareness of the consequences.
Many users may also view the act of uploading a personal photo to these applications with the same simplicity as posting a photo on Instagram or Facebook. Furthermore, knowing that large language models already collect data from the internet may make them feel that their personal contribution causes no notable harm.
But the danger lies in the small, invisible details. When you voluntarily upload your photo to an AI image-generation application, you are — without realizing it — granting the service provider direct legal permission to use your face and the biometric data extracted from it for purposes far beyond simply creating the fun image you were looking forward to.
These photos may later be used to train new AI models, or sold as part of databases for marketing, analytical, or even security purposes — all based on lengthy and complex terms of service that users typically agree to without reading carefully.
Luiza Jarovsky, co-founder of the AI, Tech & Privacy Academy, warned against this phenomenon, emphasizing that voluntary participation in these trends grants AI companies like OpenAI explicit consent to process and exploit this personal data. She notes that this consent goes beyond the protection provided by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) under the “legitimate interests” clause, legally opening the door for images to be used in ways users never imagined.
Data Is Valuable.. And the Image Is Just an Entry Point
Luiza Jarovsky described this approach as a “clever privacy trick”, one that gave AI companies a rare opportunity to collect a massive volume of recent images and accompanying information for use in training and developing their models — and possibly for other undisclosed purposes not subject to transparent oversight.
It appears that the overwhelming success of the Ghibli-style image generation trend whetted the appetite of these companies to go even further. While previous trends were limited to uploading just a single photo, the AI Doll trend raised the bar on the data being collected. Users are no longer simply sharing their photo; they are also asked to provide additional personal details about their profession, interests, and even their ambitions at times — under the pretext of improving the precision of the visual generation.
As a result, the image is no longer the product itself; it has become merely a gateway to a vast amount of personal data freely handed over — without compensation — to AI systems, further enhancing their power, precision, and ability to understand, market, and target in the future.
Your Digital Persona.. A New Entry Point to Revealing Your True Self
To create a precise animated digital version of yourself in the “AI doll” style, uploading a personal photo is no longer sufficient. The process now requires sharing detailed descriptive information, including the nature of your work, your personal interests, your hobbies outside of your job, and any traits you wish to display on your digital character. The more details provided, the more accurate the resulting image and the closer it matches your real features and actual life.
Here, the problem is not limited to granting permission to use your facial image, but extends to supplying AI systems with rich, contextual personal data that they could not — in most cases — collect automatically or infer from public sources.
Eamonn Maguire, Head of Account Security at Proton, warns that this broad sharing of personal information could be akin to “opening Pandora’s box”, carrying unknown consequences that are difficult to predict at this time.
The real danger lies not only in data collection, but in completely losing control over how it is used afterward. This information can be exploited to train new language models, generate personalized content, deliver more precise and impactful targeted advertising, or even in undisclosed scenarios — all without the user having any authority over these uses or even awareness of them.
Maguire's Warning About Far-Reaching Consequences:
Security expert Maguire outlined the dangerous dimensions of personal information exploitation by large language models such as ChatGPT, stressing that “the deep behavioral and profiling data these tools can produce — based on analysis of available data — may have significant consequences on the life paths of individuals. These consequences span sensitive areas including: insurance coverage criteria, loan terms, various surveillance applications, comprehensive behavioral analysis operations, intelligence gathering, and up to the possibility of highly targeted cyberattacks.”
From Privacy Violations to Security Threats:
While the privacy concerns related to leading AI companies such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and X — regarding how they handle, use, or potentially misuse this data — represent an important dimension of the picture, the challenge goes beyond that to touch on cybersecurity. The enormous volumes of personal data collected by these tools will inevitably make them highly attractive targets for cybercriminals. What is particularly alarming is that the track record of AI companies in securing user data does not meet the required standard.
Breach Incidents as Alarming Evidence:
In this context, Maguire cited two prominent incidents that illustrate the fragility of the security situation: the first, the DeepSeek incident, which resulted in the company's user database being exposed publicly on the internet. The second, a security incident affecting a software library used by OpenAI, which led to the leak of sensitive user data including names, email addresses, and credit card details.
Risks Turning Into Real Threats:
In light of these security vulnerabilities, exploitation of personal images and information by hackers for multiple malicious purposes becomes a real possibility. These purposes include spreading political disinformation, executing identity theft operations, organized financial fraud, and sophisticated online scams. These concerns thus transcend the realm of privacy risks to become genuine security threats that demand vigilance and effective precautionary measures.
Privacy in the Age of AI: Between Social Temptation and Hidden Risks
In today's digital world, preserving privacy and avoiding the sharing of personal data has become a difficult challenge — if not an impossible one. Yet the wave of AI-generated images, spreading at tremendous speed across social platforms, shows that many users are ignoring the security and privacy consequences associated with these tools. Despite growing awareness of the importance of data protection, the temptation to participate in the latest social trends appears to override caution and rational thinking.
AI companies expertly exploit these psychological and social behaviors, offering digital experiences designed to be visually appealing and easy to use, prompting millions to adopt them without hesitation. Behind these seamless experiences, these companies collect vast amounts of personal and sensitive data that would be difficult to obtain through traditional means.
The rapid spread of Ghibli-style or “doll” image generation websites represents only the beginning of a new phase in the evolution of generative AI, along with the accompanying and growing threats to privacy. In the coming months, we can expect to see more of these trends spreading like wildfire across social platforms, increasing the volume of data collected and the risks associated with it.
In conclusion, the phenomenon of AI-generated images is not merely a passing trend, but rather a launching point for a deeper discussion about the hidden costs of technological innovation. Whether it concerns environmental impacts, ethical dilemmas, or how to responsibly distribute limited computational resources, this issue pushes us to reconsider our digital priorities and the necessity of striking a balance between technological progress and the protection of fundamental human values.
