“Meta” Prepares to Launch a New AI-Powered Tool to Detect Fake Ages on Instagram

Meta is preparing to launch a new tool based on artificial intelligence technologies, aimed at identifying users who provide false information about their ages on the “Instagram” platform, according to a report by “Bloomberg”.

The company is set to launch the “Adult Classifier” tool at the beginning of next year, which will detect users under the age of 18 who tamper with the birth dates registered on their Facebook and Instagram accounts. When such cases are detected, the system will automatically activate the strictest privacy settings.

In this context, “Allison Hartnett”, Meta's Director of Product Management for Youth and Social Impact, said that the tool will rely on a set of indicators, such as the accounts the user follows and the content they regularly interact with.

Dedicated Teen Accounts from “Meta”

If the tool suspects that a user is under 18 years old, they will be automatically switched to a dedicated teen account, regardless of the age they entered in their profile.

“Meta” had first announced its plans to use artificial intelligence to detect the real ages of users when it launched teen accounts last September. This step comes as part of the company's efforts to enhance the safety of young users and ensure a safer experience on its platforms.

Strict Privacy Settings for Teen Accounts

Teen accounts include strict privacy settings that are applied automatically to users under the age of 16, where the account is switched to Private and is prevented from messaging strangers who are not on the user's friends list.

This step comes in response to pressure from lawmakers and parents, which prompted “Meta” to restrict privacy options for young users to ensure their safety.

While “Meta” has not yet revealed the accuracy of the “Adult Classifier” tool in determining ages, it confirmed that it will allow users to appeal if their ages are incorrectly determined, and it is currently working on establishing a framework for the appeals process.

Furthermore, “Meta” will require teenagers seeking to modify their ages on their accounts to provide proof of identity, as part of its efforts to verify users' ages. The options available to users include uploading a government-issued ID card, or sending a selfie via the “Yoti” identity verification system, a “Meta” partner that offers age estimation services through facial feature analysis. Once the identity verification test result is submitted, the video is deleted from both sides to ensure privacy.

Meta's Project to Combat Age Manipulation on Instagram

Meta's project comes as part of broader efforts to prevent age manipulation on the “Instagram” platform. In addition to the “Adult Classifier” tool, the company plans to warn teenagers who try to create a new account using an email linked to another account with a different age. The company will also rely on device identifiers to track those attempting to create new profiles on the service, including the devices' IP Address and Mac Address numbers.

It is worth noting that “Meta”, along with “Google” and “ByteDance” (the company that owns “TikTok”), recently failed to convince a US federal judge to dismiss a series of lawsuits accusing these companies of failing to protect young users from the harmful effects of social media use. These legal challenges reflect the increasing pressure that tech companies face in their pursuit of ensuring the safety of their users, especially younger age groups.
