Meta Officially Shuts Down the Standalone Messenger Website in April 2026… What Does This Mean for Users?
Meta has officially announced the closure of the standalone website for the Messenger app, which will no longer be available starting April 2026.
According to the company's help page, users will only be able to send and receive messages online through logging into their Facebook accounts.
As for users who rely on Messenger without a Facebook account, they will still be able to continue their conversations via the Messenger mobile app only. Chat history can be restored on any platform using the personal identification number (PIN) that was entered when the backup was first created, or it can be reset if the user has forgotten it.
This decision comes months after Meta shut down the standalone Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac. The tech giant had been redirecting desktop users to Facebook's website to continue using the service, rather than relying on the Messenger website.
Users have expressed their frustration and anger on social media, especially those who have deleted their Facebook accounts, viewing this decision as forcing them to depend on the Facebook platform to manage their conversations.
Despite the frustration this move causes, it allows Meta to reduce operational costs by cutting down the number of platforms that require ongoing maintenance.
For the record, the Messenger app was first launched under the name “Facebook Chat” in 2008, and then became a standalone app in 2011. Over the years, Messenger became a service independent from Facebook, until 2014, when the company removed messaging from its main app to encourage users to use Messenger — before beginning in 2023 to re-integrate Messenger back into the Facebook app.
