Ahmed Refaat, a footballer for the Egyptian club "Modern Sport," passed away on Saturday after a long battle with complications from a cardiac arrest he suffered during an Egyptian league match four months ago.
The club announced in a statement posted on its Facebook page the death of Refaat due to a sharp deterioration in his health condition. Last March, his heart muscle stopped for approximately two hours on the pitch before doctors were able to save him and bring him back to life.
The club stated: "With full patience and grief, and with complete faith in God's will and decree, Modern Sport Club announces the death of first-team and Egypt national team player Ahmed Refaat due to a sharp deterioration in his health condition. He was transferred to the hospital where he passed away, after a long struggle following the health crisis he faced on March 11, 2024."

Last March, Ahmed Refaat (30 years old) suffered a cardiac arrest lasting nearly two hours, after collapsing during the final minutes of his team's match against Al-Ittihad Club in Alexandria. He was transferred to the hospital for treatment.
The hospital administration that treated the player issued a statement, indicating that Refaat arrived in a state of cardiac arrest, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures were carried out for nearly two hours in the emergency department.
Last April, Refaat left the hospital, and local media reported on his recovery and the possibility of his return to the pitch soon.
Refaat joined "Modern Sport" in October 2022 from Al-Masry Club, and was loaned for six months to UAE club Al-Wahda in January 2023. He had previously played for Enppi and Zamalek clubs.
Refaat appeared in 7 matches with the Egyptian senior national team, scoring two goals and assisting one. He won the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations title in 2013.

A state of grief prevailed in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate following the death of Ahmed Refaat, player for Modern Sport and the Egypt national team, in the early hours of Saturday morning. He passed away at the age of approximately 31 years after battling illness due to the health crisis he faced last March. His family, friends, and sports colleagues were shocked by his sudden collapse after the match against Al-Ittihad Al-Sakandari in the league.
Social media platforms turned into sad mourning arenas, where thousands of users posted photos of the late player Ahmed Refaat, offering prayers to God to have mercy on him and grant him paradise, and to grant his family and relatives patience and consolation.
Mohamed Hassan, one of the late player's relatives, told Al-Watan newspaper that the player passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning after battling illness, as a result of the health crisis he faced last March.
"Hassan" confirmed that Ahmed Refaat was known for his kindness and good character, and was beloved by everyone. He used to perform charitable works in his village of Ibshan in Bela Center, and was humble, sincere, and attentive to family ties.
"Hassan" added that after recovering from his health setback last March and staying in the hospital for approximately one month, he left the hospital and continued treatment at home, with doctors warning him against exerting major physical effort. Just 12 days before his death, he appeared for the first time at his team Modern Sport's training sessions, as if saying farewell to his teammates before his departure.
Funeral Prayer Schedule for Ahmed Refaat
The funeral prayer for the late player Ahmed Refaat is scheduled to be held in the village of Ibshan in Bela Center, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, where he will be laid to rest in the family's cemetery in the village.

It is worth noting that player Ahmed Refaat was born on June 20, 1993, in the village of Ibshan in Bela Center, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate. He played in the winger position and was a member of Modern Sport Club and the Egyptian national football team.
Regarding the details of Ahmed Refaat's illness, he suffered a health crisis during his team Modern Sport's match against Al-Ittihad Al-Sakandari in the Egyptian league last March. The crisis caused his heart muscle to stop, and he was immediately treated on the pitch. Afterwards, Refaat fell into a state of unconsciousness for several days before regaining consciousness on March 11 of that year.
