An Initiative Advancing Digital Epistemic Justice at Oxford University Debates

The "Bil Arabi" Initiative Advances Digital Epistemic Justice at Oxford University Debates
The "Bil Arabi" Initiative, affiliated with Qatar Foundation, participated in discussion sessions on the sidelines of the Second United Kingdom University Arabic Debating Championship, organized by the Qatar Debating Center in collaboration with the Middle East Centre at St Antony's College, University of Oxford, during the period from February 7 to 9, 2026.
The participation came as part of the initiative's regional and international tours, with the aim of strengthening the presence of the Arabic language in digital and intellectual discussions, providing platforms for dialogue and the exchange of ideas, with a focus on developing youth capabilities and encouraging creative collaboration.
The Arabic Language in the Age of AI
The championship opened with a session titled "The Arabic Language and Epistemic Justice in the Digital World", presented by Thaer Fawwaz Farhat, a debating specialist at the Qatar Debating Center, with the participation of Dr. Laith Alawna and Maya Al-Jaber, a psychology researcher at the University of Oxford.
The session discussed the status of the Arabic language in algorithms and AI systems, and the potential bias against it compared to other languages, in addition to the concepts of "digital colonialism" and the limits of epistemic justice. It also touched on the requirements for building an effective Arab presence in a digital environment where the role is not limited to consumption, but extends to the production of Arabic knowledge and content.
A Round Table Linking Digitization to Global Challenges
On the second day, the initiative and the Qatar Debating Center organized a round table focused on the Arab world's role in addressing migration, climate change, and food security, with the participation of experts, the initiative's team, and the debaters.
The discussion addressed migration as an issue where historical memory intersects with future opportunities, with an emphasis on leveraging Arab expertise in the diaspora, which, according to the World Bank, represents human capital exceeding two trillion dollars, placing it in the context of economic and social opportunities for both Arab and Western countries.
Honoring the "Bil Arabi" Initiative
The championship's closing ceremony witnessed the honoring of the initiative, in recognition of its role in supporting Arabic digital and intellectual discussions, and strengthening the presence of the Arabic language on international educational and cultural platforms.
