Snapchat’s Story of Changing Usernames ❗️

Snapchat, After a Long Wait, Allows Username Changes for the First Time in Its History:

Snap Inc. announced that Snapchat users will be able to change their usernames,

later this month,

The company’s spokesperson explained: “When we first launched Snapchat in 2011,

we designed our core system around accounts with unique usernames,

much like email accounts at the time, to rebuild this framework,

we had to develop a new way to identify each Snapchat user without requiring our community

to create new profiles from scratch”.

He continued: “We have now implemented a username-based system that provides the required flexibility when it comes to usernames”,

This means that you can keep the name you originally used without needing to create a new account,

and changing the username will not affect aspects of users’ accounts,

such as friend lists, Snap codes, Snap scores, and Memories, for example,

Snapchat also stated that all iOS and Android users worldwide,

will be able to change their usernames starting from February 23rd of this month,

Snap Inc. also noted that users will not be able to select usernames that have previously been used,

and if a user decides to change their username,

the app will display a reminder and alert that usernames can only be changed once per year.

How to Change Your Username?

To change your username,

1- You can tap the “Bitmoji” icon in the upper-left corner of the camera to go to your profile.

2- From there you can access Settings by tapping the gear icon in the upper-right corner.

3- When you tap “Username”, you will see a “Change Username” button highlighted in blue.

4- You can then enter the new username you want and press Next to complete the process.

Snap says that username changes were one of the most requested features.

It explains that Snapchat, as an app built on the foundation of ephemerality,

understands that people grow and change and may want to change their usernames.

When Will This Take Effect?

Based on what Snapchat announced, the change will take effect by February 23rd of this month.

Although this feature has been long awaited, its implementation was not a surprise.

Reverse engineering expert ”Alessandro Paluzzi” first discovered this feature in October 2021,

and revealed that Snap had been developing a way to change usernames.

The new announcement coincides with the platform launching many new features.

It also announced a partnership with Ticketmaster to launch a new way for users to discover live entertainment events,

directly within “Snap Map”.

The new in-app “Ticketmatcher Mini” matches users with events they are interested in based on their preferences,

while the company revealed just days earlier its plans to introduce mid-roll ads within Snap Stars stories

This feature is still in a very early testing phase for a small group of content creators based in the United States.

But the platform planned to roll it out more broadly across “Snap Stars” in the coming months,

these ads function as mid-roll ads within Stories, and content creators receive a share of the ad revenue,

and the amount is determined through a payment formula that takes into account factors such as posting frequency and audience engagement.
